Cookbooks:
It's a classic and it's constantly updated (I believe it's in the 9th edition right now). This is one of the best general cookbooks you can find. Lots of basic information, plus great and easy recipes. I gave one to each of my sons when they started off in their own apartments. If you can only have one cookbook, this is the one you want.

This one's really for novices or beginners -- many of the same recipes in the standard Betty Crocker Cookbook, but this one has "step by step" pictures of each recipe's preparation. This really helps make the cooking process fool-proof. This one is really a recipe book, not a cook book, though. It's solely recipes -- none of the extra cooking tips, tricks, background, teachings, etc, found in the standard Betty. Still, it's a very targetted book and does what it sets out to do very, very well.

These are "yearbooks" -- each book contains all the recipes found in that year's Southern Living magazine. This is a wonderful series that goes back more than 20 years. You can purchase the current year, but I like to find used copies in used bookstores or flea markets. Recipes cover all the main categories, plus they're organized by month. This means you'll find seasonal recipes in the appropriate month (Backyard cookouts or picnics -- look in the summer months). You'll also find holiday recipes in the proper month (Halloween in October, Thanksgiving in November, etc). Each month covers main dishes, vegetables, beverages, desserts, breads, etc.
